Hey Roni!... I've been meaning to contact you for a question... what are you're thoughts on listening to secular R&B music to help get in the "mood"? Is it okay or should we refrain?
Dear Pure Heart,
Your email brought a smile to my face. I am so blessed by your desire to honor the Lord in all areas of your life. You are such a gem! The world needs MANY more young ones like you.
The short answer is “yes, it’s ok,” but I would add a word of caution. Like all things in the world, we must use the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit as we make our selections. There are some great R&B songs with lyrics that bring honor to romantic love, and that will bless your marriage. As you know, there are also songs that dishonor women, and marriage, etc. so I would obviously refrain from those. For some people, with a history of sexual sin where certain R&B/Hip-Hop music was involved, it would be wise to refrain from that type of music altogether. Why continue to listen to things that will remind you and potentially tempt you back into sin when there are other great options available (e.g., instrumental)?
I do think that it is important to "set the mood” and you can most definitely find some great, "safe & sexy" R&B songs to help you do that. Here are a few songs that I suggest. These songs do not contain derogatory statements or expletives, but this does not imply endorsement of the artist or all of their music.
“Sexual Healing” Marvin Gaye
“Bed” J Holiday
“Tasty Love” Freddie Jackson
“Wet The Bed” Chris Brown *Note: These lyrics may make you blush, but they actually remind me of Song of Songs. ;-)
“Seems Like You Ready” Ty Boogie
“Stroke You Up” Ty Boogie *Note: Blushing may ensue… ;-D
“Let’s Make Love” Keri Hilson
“All Of the Night” Kelly Rowland
“Can You Handle It” Usher
“Do Me Now” K. Roosevelt
“Sweet Love” Chris Brown
“Good Kisser” Usher
“Birthday Sex” Jeremih
“Sex Therapy” Robin Thicke
Love you my sister. Have fun! ;-)
